About me and Vesa Terra >

Hi.

My name is Punya Syon Pandey and I am 16 years old as of when this website was made. I like to play the piano, travel, skateboard, code (of course), and make things from wood and metal. I am also a firm believer in using technology to raise awareness about world issues. Climate change is the next big challenge humanity faces, and we can each do our part to contribute to a solution.

Punya, what do you do on your part for now?

I code to raise awareness about climate change.

Recently, I developed the Vesa Terra App (which is available on the Play Store and the App Store) where users can estimate their eco-footprint, compare it, learn about the effects and the possible outcomes of warming scenarios, and adopt steps to curb climate change together.

The Vesa Terra website is another one of my attempts to raise awareness about climate change, this time using predictions from machine learning models applied to datasets from the Government of Canada, to make observations and get a general idea of where we are headed. I hope you enjoy this website and share it with others.

Machine learning >

Machine learning is when computers figure out patterns from data. This can be used to make weather predictions, detect unusual banking transactions, classify spam, or even examine medical images! You can find more information on the ML models I have used if you click the "ML Models Used" button.

But Punya, what are you doing with machine learning and climate change?

I will be taking in datasets from Open Canada (such as snow cover in the last 30 years, sea ice levels, etc.), predicting trends, and finding patterns using machine learning models, then making observations with these trends and finally presenting them to you. Pretty cool, huh?

Navigation and structure >

The Vesa Terra website is an ongoing project and will be constantly updated. I call each evaluation of a dataset an observation. You can find observations at the top left of the website through the dropdown menu labelled "observations".

Each observation consists of:
