Let’s imagine a bathtub with the tap running. We don’t want this bathtub to overflow, but we can’t shut the tap completely just yet. So, what do we do? We pull the plug.

Now, coming back to climate change. This bathtub is Earth, the water represents emissions levels, and the tap represents our inflow of emissions into Earth.

But what exactly is the drain plug in this scenario? The drain plug is greenhouse gas sequestration.

Greenhouse gas sequestration is the process of converting a greenhouse gas into a solid or a liquid and depositing it somewhere, for example a carbon pool. In this way, the greenhouse gas is removed from the Earth's atmosphere, reducing global warming.

Biological greenhouse gas sequestration - This is when a greenhouse gas is stored in biological units such as trees, plants, soil, etc.

Geological greenhouse gas sequestration - This is when a greenhouse gas is injected/stored in geological units, such as rocks.

Technological greenhouse gas sequestration - Scientists are currently figuring out how to sequester greenhouse gases on a larger scale more efficiently. We must be inclusive towards such efforts, support them and advocate for the importance of such breakthroughs.
